Est. 2010, Revived 2023
Um*click*qombothi is Princeton’s premiere African a cappella group. After seeing the Soweto Gospel Choir perform on campus, a group of friends decided it was time to bring the joy of African music to Princeton. In October 2010, Umqombothi was born. Our name, from the Zulu language, is a rich beer commonly found in southern Africa. Just like some real Umqombothi, we are both refreshing and intoxicating. We bring vibrant music from several different African cultures of both a traditional and more contemporary nature. We hope to spread awareness about the African continent and to bring rich diversity to the University's artistic scene. The group was started by Tanyaradzwa Tawenga ‘14 and soon after, Umqombothi took Princeton by storm with its unique sounds, dazzling drum breakdowns, and vibrant energy! Unfortunately, the group went dormant for a while, but it has now been revived as of Fall 2023. Umqombothi has come a long way since its early days but the group still maintains the same spirit it was founded with. Moving forward we plan to have jam sessions, arch sings, and multiple guest performances which we hope will give us the experience we need to host our own full show.
